Part of Sahara India Pariwar Air Sahara is one of India’s leading private airlines Established on September 1991 and began operations on December 1993 with a fleet of two Boeing 737-200 aircrafts. Then it was known as Sahara Airlines and finally christened as Air Sahara in the year 2000. In the year 2004 Air Sahara started flights from Chennai to Colombo thus becoming an international carrier. Air Sahara finally got rechristened as Jet Lite in a major announcement on 17th July 2007 to be operated as a low cost carrier.
The Jet Lite airlines also operates helicopters which are available for charter services. The Jet Lite’s main base is Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi with hubs at other metro cities as well. Jet Lite's flight will have low priced tickets than that of Jet Airways but may be costlier than that of low cost flyers. However, the passengers will not have to pay for their meals on board in Jet Lite Airways.
It is assumed that the creation of this new segment by Jet Lite Airways may result in a cutthroat competition in Indian Aviation Industry. Jetlite’s overhaul is also expected to boost its fleet of aircrafts with the delivery of 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which were ordered last year by the Air Sahara.
